It’s a way of using the “other”, sometimes neglected elements of Abstract Rhythm in Timemusic like texture, color, density, transparency, spatial relationships...rhythmic motives, rather than Time pulse. It represents an experience of music where emphasis is on the vertical, profound plane rather than on the narrative expression on the horizontal linear plane musicians commonly use.Improvisation and experimentation from artists who explore music’s outer reaches
“This is our quest to show the universality of jazz music,” says Shuya Okino, half of Japanese duo Kyoto Jazz Massive, about their takeover of our uptempo jazz playlist. “We’ve combined old and new tracks from different countries, and we worked to make the musical gradation natural.” That gradation includes Sleep Walker’s “THE VOYAGE” featuring Pharoah Sanders—“one of the greatest collaborations between a Japanese jazz band and a US jazz legend,” says Okino. “This incredible track was born from an enthusiastic live session of cross-generation, cross-cultural artists.” And from the newer end of the spectrum comes Nubya Garcia’s 2020 cumbia offering “La cumbia me está llamando” featuring La Perla. “It’s a great example of a new generation of jazz coming out of London,” comments Okino. Listen to the rest of their selections, and if you hear something you like, add it to your library.
