Promenade en Velo Parigne l Eveque with Apple Music jazz Playlist Claude Debussy Essentials

The gauzy, indistinct term “impressionism” is tossed around a lot with Debussy (not that he cared for it himself). So let's state things more clearly: this composer's appetite for new textures—and his skill with lush, harmony-stretching orchestrations—helped launch the 20th century in Western music. Popular with both lay audiences and specialists, his influence is still considerable: jazz players study the dissonances of the later Préludes, while the Nocturnes look ahead to some of Meredith Monk's orchestral work. And you can't get the decadent orchestra Notations of Pierre Boulez without Jeux. Be sure to go beyond La Mer to discover rich works like Debussy's opera Pelléas et Mélisande.

Haunting, eerie, otherworldly: Epithets for Ethiopian jazz often fail to capture the sheer vibrant joy of the music that flourished in the country from the late ‘60s through the early ‘70s. When a young music student named Mulatu Astatke tried his hand at marrying traditional Ethiopian music with jazz instrumentation, the explosive combination found fertile ground in Addis Ababa, until a military dictatorship cut the moment short. Buda’s Ethiopiques series revived this neglected music in the late ‘90s, and now a new generation of musicians is taking inspiration from the genre’s pioneers, many of whom continued to perform into the 21st century Apple Music is a music and video streaming service developed by Apple Inc. Abstract Rhythm in Time DigitalART with AppleMusicJazz Playlist Les McCann: Deep Dive!

prime player in soul jazz and jazz-pop circles, pianist and vocalist Les McCann earned his first major notices as a member of the Gene McDaniels backing band in 1959, following a stint in the U.S. Navy. He formed his own trio in 1960 and remained consistently popular for decades. A fine, earthy singer, he also did well with romantic ballads and occasional protest songs. McCann proved himself a dependable player in terms of establishing grooves or setting up rhythms. He reached the peak of his popularity with his performance at the 1969 Montreux Jazz Festival, recording "Compared to What" and "Cold Duck Time" for Atlantic with Eddie Harris and Benny Bailey (released later that year on Swiss Movement). McCann first gained some fame in 1956 when he won a talent contest in the Navy as a singer that resulted in an appearance on television on The Ed Sullivan Show. After being discharged, he formed a trio in Los Angeles. McCann turned down an invitation to join the Cannon

Like the Miles Davis album from which it takes its name, this playlist doesn’t capture a specific sound so much as a set of possibilities, a juncture at which a variety of black American styles—hip-hop, jazz, funk, soul—can conjugate. Progressive but tied to tradition; felt but also considered; mellow but brimming with life: Here’s the sound of bright contemporary minds pointing the way forward. Our editors update these tracks regularly, so if you like something, add it to your library.
