This latter-day Blue Note recording artist is most commonly thought of as a keeper of the post-bop flame. But aside from his driving, straight-ahead releases like Landmarks, he's also shown a flair for unexpected curatorial choices—performing an obscure Ornette Coleman tune on Rush Hour and presenting the work of Third Stream theorist Gunther Schuller on Streams of Expression. From balladry to burners, our playlist covers this tenor saxophonist's wide-ranging intelligence, and includes his performances alongside artists like bassist Esperanza Spalding and guitarist John Scofield.
Tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker's session work for rock and pop figures occasionally overshadowed his career as a jazz musician. After founding the fusion outfit Dreams in '69, Brecker alternated between jazz material with Horace Silver, Billy Cobham, his sibling Randy in the Brecker Brothers and sessions for James Taylor and others. The multiple GRAMMY®-winner made an assured debut as a jazz bandleader in '87 and continued to innovate until illness cut short his ascent in '07. His versatility remains a major influence on the new breed of tenor players.
