EDITORS’ NOTES In 1965 some of Chicago's boldest musicians formed the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). The focus was on original music created outside the city's club scene, and though jazz was its bedrock, the AACM freely integrated elements from across the stylistic map. Trombonist George Lewis drew on 20th-century classical music for “Monads,” where space became a key sonic element. The AACM ethos has allowed its members to use whatever materials serve their purposes, creating a prescient model for genre-agnostic creation. Trumpeter Lester Bowie even channels pop on his brass-loaded take on “I Only Have Eyes for You.”
