Signal to Noise Apple Music Electroni : With Abstract Rhythm in Time DigitalART byAlan Silva

EDITORS’ NOTES EDITORS’ NOTES Don't get too comfortable—these adventurous explorations are like an experimental trip into the abyss. This set of fringe finds—techno and acid-house abstractions, '80s-obsessed synth throwbacks, deconstructed lo-fi rockers, ambient excursions both noisy and therapeutic—are exhilarating reminders that music's rules were made to be broken. EDITORS’ NOTES Rollins established his reputation with audacious, barreling solos, but his skills as a sensitive and subtle interpreter of other composers is just as noteworthy. He keeps a light-footed feel during “Moritat,” which adapts Kurt Weill's “Mack the Knife” for a jazz quartet, and his work with Thelonious Monk's catalog offers plenty of intriguing modernist phrasing, as on “Bemsha Swing.”

EDITORS’ NOTES In 1965 some of Chicago's boldest musicians formed the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). The focus was on original music created outside the city's club scene, and though jazz was its bedrock, the AACM freely integrated elements from across the stylistic map. Trombonist George Lewis drew on 20th-century classical music for “Monads,” where space became a key sonic element. The AACM ethos has allowed its members to use whatever materials serve their purposes, creating a prescient model for genre-agnostic creation. Trumpeter Lester Bowie even channels pop on his brass-loaded take on “I Only Have Eyes for You.”

Play anything in the vast 40-million-song catalog, along with your entire iTunes library. The marriage of jazz and Indian music makes plenty of sense; both traditions rely heavily upon improvisation. Early experiments in the ‘60s by jazz musicians such as John Coltrane (“India”) or British reedist Joe Harriott (“Raga Mehga”) were largely ornamental, but by the ‘70s the exchange flowed both ways. Real understandings of structural underpinnings developed, so guitarist John McLaughlin fit authoritatively in Hindustani modes (“Kriti”), while a generation of musicians that grew up with such fusions like pianist Vijay Iyer and saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa deftly pushed beyond the old signifiers for something more elusive in flavor (“Tribal Wisdom”)
